Get Out of the Way to Your Own Success…Ax Your Excuses

By Carolyn Hansen

excuses1It stands to reason that if your goal is to achieve any of your life dreams then you will need to stop making excuses and start marching.

Even if you don’t admit it to others, you know in your heart that your excuses are your worst enemy.

No matter how difficult your circumstances may seem, this is the hard truth:

The only way to succeed is to take personal responsibility for making things work out the way you want them to. You must start by owning your own decisions and not using excuses to let yourself off the hook.

In other words, you must make yourself accountable. Accountability is the key to any health, fitness or weight loss success.

Let’s face it, if you keep buying into your excuses when it’s time to actually do what you should, you won’t get very far.

Every one of us has a secret list of favorite excuses that we consciously or subconsciously turn into when we’re trying to avoid something.

You know them well…”I am too busy. I can’t find the time for myself. I am just not motivated enough. I am too stressed out right now. I’ll do it later. I can’t control myself and on and on.

You may have even convinced yourself that this is just the way things are and you can’t do anything about it.

Well, if you can’t do anything about it then who will? All the power lies in your lap. You’re the one who has to shift priorities and quit leaning on worn out excuses.

Which ones are your favorites? It’s time to identify the “dream stealers” and eliminate their supposed power.

Some excuses are easier to identify than others simply because they don’t make much such when you stop and think about them. Others are less obvious and take more observation on your part.

Excuses like “there are not enough hours in your day to fit in some exercise or prepare a healthy meal might hold weight on some days…but likely is not so true on others. However, it is up to you to put your priorities in order…have you made exercising and preparing nutritious meals low on your list?

If you view time as an enemy, it’s time to re-evaluate your busy schedule and rid yourself o some of the less important things you do to make room for the things that are actually going to improve your life…like healthy cooking/eating and proper exercise.

As you begin to “look into yourself” and observe your excuses before buying into them, you’ll discover more deep seated excuses that control you such as “I have no will power.” Or, “I have cravings that are truly irresistible.

Face it, these are your “comfort stories”…the ones you buy into when you don’t want or don’t know how to do what you should be doing.

Success lies within each and every one of us but our excuses prevent us from connecting with it.

Be honest with yourself…what is it that is preventing you from moving forward towards your dreams and goals. Why do these things continue to live in your mind without manifesting in your life?

Because of your excuses…because you allow your excuses to dictate your life rather than taking responsibility and empowering your life.

After you’ve identified and accepted your excuses, write them down…create a list. Its way too easy to ignore a mental list…you need to see it physically with your eyes and connect with its resonance as you write it down.

Write down every reason you can think of as to why you believe your dreams are not achievable. For each excuse or rationalization you use, think of an effective countermeasure, an opposing thought, a way to break out of your negative though pattern.

Take it a step farther and make a contract with yourself that identifies the excuses you use most often and specifies what you will do instead of giving in to them.

By creating this contract, you create an effective tool that you can use whenever you catch yourself making excuses.
