As COVID-19 hit the nation in March and April,  most gyms around the country closed their doors and fitness enthusiasts  were left to their own

devices to stay fit.     Some have fitness equipment at home,   others used equipment owned by friends,  while other people relied on “bodyweight training” and other means.    I know some people just ceased the resistance and cardiovascular training that are “building blocks of good health.

The reality is,   gyms  can be a “hot spot”  for the COVID virus,   very sad considering our focus in a gym is to improve health.      So many gyms are open now.   Where is your exercise and health during our “season of COVID”?

As the gyms reopened in late April and May,   many people returned to the gym  (but with major restrictions).    Some waited several weeks and then tried out their gym and did an evaluation.     I know others that have yet to go back.     What is the best and most prudent approach and should you

Be back pumping weight and using swimming facilities,  saunas,  steam rooms and cardio equipment during a pandemic?

For me,  the answer is really all about safety.    People view this pandemic very differently.    Some may wear masks into their gym facility and then pocket them,    For others,  masks,  sanitizers and antibacterial solutions are common.    How do you keep social distancing in a gym?

To begin,  I’d evaluate how your gym does business.   How do they communicate the need for safety in the facility?   Do they provide for safe use (and distance)  with machines?    Do they mandate masks and use of sanitization solutions?     The bottom line is,   how comfortable are you with being in a public place,  using equipment and facilities that other people touch and the approach and cleanliness of the facility.    There really isn’t an answer, except the comfort level you have in use of the facility.

When ask if they have returned to the gym,   I know several who simply say,   “I’m not ready yet”.    If you are one of those folks,   never fear,  remember,  “the world is your gym”.    You don’t have to be in a fitness facility to remain physically fit.    It does require some effort on your part and flexibility.

Remember,  if you have a facility that is focused on health  (what a concept),  do a review as to their effort and diligence.    Go during off hours and take precautions.    I personally find the weekends  a great time,  especially the afternoons and early evenings.

Yes,  the pandemic is a serious problem.   Follow the path in which you are most comfortable, but don’t compound it by giving up  on your fitness journey.    Consider this a partial detour.    “Detours”  can be educational and benefit you long term!      Be safe and be healthy!
