What does My Semen tell me about Myself?

Recently, we had questions from some of our Gay Life After 40 readers about erections and semen concentration. This is fairly normal questions from men that are 40 and above.  On average, levels of testosterone fall by about 1% per year beyond age 40, but most older men still have enough testosterone to function sexually. To produce arousal, testosterone acts on the brain, and these nerve cells become less hormone-responsive with age. In contrast, men tend to produce more female hormones (estradiol and prolactin) as they age.

Nighttime erections diminish with age. Between the ages of 45 and 54, men average 3.3 erections per night; between ages 65 and 75, it’s 2.3 erections. The erections also tend to become briefer and less rigid with age

Ejaculation also changes with age. The muscular contractions of orgasm are less intense. Erectile Dysfunction is not part of the normal aging process. Instead, ED reflects the impact of chronic diseases that become increasingly common with age. The most important are atherosclerosis and hypertension, which affect blood vessels, and diabetes, which strikes both blood vessels and nerves. Many drugs that older men take can interfere with sexual function, including some that treat high blood pressure, heart disease, anxiety and depression.se, ejaculation is slower and less urgent, and semen volume declines.

Regarding Semen content, we examined types of semen that men maybe experiencing a concern about .

Normal Semen

Semen is the cloudy white body fluid that is emitted from the urethra of the penis during ejaculation. Most of the fluid in semen is made up of secretions from male reproductive organs.

  • 65 per cent of the fluid is produced by the seminal vesicles
  • 30 to 35 per cent by the prostate
  • 5 per cent from the testicles and epididymes

Semen contains citric acid, free amino acids, fructose, enzymes, phosphorylcholine, prostaglandin, potassium, and zinc. The average volume of semen produced in a single ejaculation varies from 2 to 5 ml. The semen from a single ejaculation may contain between 40 million and 600 million sperm, depending on the volume of the ejaculate and the length of time since the last ejaculation.

Within 30 minutes, it typically becomes runny and clear

Sperm concentration or sperm density, this is the number of sperm in millions per milliliter (mL) of semen. Twenty million or more sperm per mL is considered normal

The Smell: A chlorine smell in semen is normal.

The Taste: Slightly sweet due to a high content of fructose. The taste of semen tends to change slightly from person to person and may be affected by diet.

Thick Semen

Amount and thickness of semen. The typical ejaculate is 2-6 milliliters of semen, or around 1/2  to 1 teaspoon. . More semen than that could dilute the concentration of sperm.  Semen should be thick to start with and become thinner 10 to 15 minutes after ejaculation. Semen that stays thick may make it difficult for sperm to move.

One of the possible causes of thicker-than-normal semen is dehydration. If a man hasn’t been drinking enough fluids, his semen may become thicker than normal. This may even happen of he drinks a good deal of soda, coffee, or other dehydrating beverages rather than water. In such a case, the effects are usually only temporary.

It is also possible that an infection could cause thick semen, though this is a less common cause. A man may, for example, notice thick semen in conjunction with discolored ejaculatory fluids. In such a case, his semen may appear yellow or green, which might indicate an infection. If these symptoms are combined with a foul-smelling discharge from the penis, an infection is even more likely.

Interestingly, a hormonal imbalance is also among the things that may cause abnormally thick semen. For example, if a man has lower-than-normal levels of testosterone, he might notice this effect. The only way to be sure of the cause of a change in semen consistency, however, is to see a doctor. A doctor can check for a hormonal imbalance or infection and advise a man of whether his semen, and sperm, are normal or not.

 Watery Semen

A man may have watery semen if he does not get the proper amount of certain essential nutrients. Protein, for instance, is believed to help make semen thicker. A man who does not get enough protein in his diet may have watery semen. Frequent ejaculation can also result in watery semen. Men with low sperm counts may also have semen that is thinner than normal. If a man ejaculates several times each day, such as with frequent masturbation or intercourse, his testicles will usually not be able to produce enough sperm to keep up. This will often result in less sperm present in the semen. Instead of the semen being thick and white, the lack of sperm could cause watery semen.

A low sperm count could also possibly cause watery semen in some men, due to the same reason: not enough sperm in the semen. Several factors can affect a man’s sperm count. If the testicles are kept at too high of a temperature, for instance, sperm might not develop properly. Clothing that is too tight can sometimes cause a rise in the temperature of a man’s testicles, especially if he exercises with this clothing on.

Red or Green Semen

If your semen has a red or brown appearance, it is probably from a burst blood vessel in the prostate. This can happen with normal ejaculation, and within a day or two, the semen should return to its normal color. If the discoloration continues for longer than a few days, you should see your doctor. Persistent blood in the semen may result from infection, trauma, and rarely, cancer.

Yellow or Green Semen

  •  white or slightly yellow tint. Semen usually turns a more yellow color as a man becomes older. This change is gradual and typically does not mean that the semen will be yellow with every ejaculation. In most cases, the semen will appear to be more yellow after an older man goes longer stretches without ejaculation; however, this may also happen with a younger man at times. There is usually no need for any action as the sperm is still healthy and viable.
  • A man’s diet affects the color of his semen as well. Food especially high in sulfur can cause yellow semen. The main kinds of food that contain sulfur and may change semen yellow include chives, onions, shallots and garlic. This also includes medications and multivitamins, which may also cause the semen to turn a light yellow color. It is entirely normal for this to occur, and it is not necessary to discontinue the diet.
  • Another common cause for yellow semen is infection. This is the first assumption of many men, and most doctors believe it is more likely to be the cause with younger men. Other signs that the yellow semen is a result of infection include greenish tints, a foul odor, and pain in the genital area. The most common infection is epididymitis, which is caused by prostate infection and can be easily cured with a round of antibiotics. Other infections, such as those caused by sexually transmitted diseases (STD) are also typically eliminated with antibiotics.Semen with a pronounced yellow or green color may indicate an infection, possibly due to a sexually transmitted disease called gonorrhea. Go to your local STD clinic. If your semen is discolored due to a gonorrhea infection, treatment with antibiotics is necessary.

Foul-Smelling Semen

Foul smelling semen is nearly always a sign of infection. Go and see your doctor.

Men may be able to influence the way their semen smells depending on what they eat. As with overall health, semen scent can also likely be improved by eating a diet rich in fruits and vegetables. If you’d like to nudge your new partner into having better smelling semen, you might also encourage him to gobble down healthy foods…and leave the heavy, fatty and salty foods for another time.

That said, there are some other issues that may be at play…

Is your partner uncircumcised? Some men who aren’t circumcised can develop a build-up of skin cells, skin oils and sweat under the foreskin. If the foreskin isn’t withdrawn and cleaned on a regular basis, bacteria can also accumulate and cause a pungent smell.

In short, in order to have a healthy sex life and have a normal semen level one has to do the following activities:

  • Have a healthy diet
  • Watch your weight
  • Exercise at least 30 min a day even at home.
  • Do Not smoke
  • Seek a medical doctor and get routine checkups
