How Much Abdominal Fat Do You Have?

strong men stay youngAs men age, not only do they lose fat burning muscle tissue, but 2.6 pounds of body fat suddenly appear on their bodies each year as the metabolic rate is dialed down and the body can no longer burn all of the food eaten. And, guess what? It is stored as fat.

Many people have the mistaken belief that if their weight has not changed they are healthy but the truth is even without body weight change fat can be stored deep inside the abdomen hindering the functioning of major organs and increasing the risk of chronic disease. It doesn’t matter if the bathroom scale stays the same the body composition of muscle to fat ratio changes.

The appearance of fat stomachs, love handles and pot bellies maybe  attractive to you or not , however the visual appearance is mild compared to what is going on inside. It is the fat inside the body that is the real problem, the visceral fat. You can be at normal body weight and have this harmful fat deep inside your body and you will not even know that you have it.

You cannot see this fat…it is only available with body scanning methods, however, be aware that this fat is particularly hazardous, spewing out toxic chemicals that aggressively change the hormonal and chemical balance of your body. This is the fat that wraps around major organs and does silent damage in them most susceptible part of the human body, the abdomen, where all of our working “machinery” is located.

This fat increases inflammation making it difficult for important organs such as your heart, lungs, kidneys and liver to do their jobs. This sets the table for life-threatening disease.

There is a quick easy way to self-evaluate your health and your own health risks. Your waist circumference is a good indicator of the amount of abdominal fat you have (both inside and outside). With a tape measure figure the distance around the smallest areas of your abdomen below your rib cage and above your belly button.

Males should use these guidelines:

  • Ideal waist measurement is between 31 and 36 inches
  • Overweight is between 36 and 40 inches
  • Obese is over 40 inches

You really need to get your head around the fact that it is far easier to start now and do a little bit of maintenance each week on the old body to keep yourself in shape. More importantly, it will reduce your risk of chronic disease that could be sneaking up on you without you noticing. Unfortunately by the time the symptoms of disease or illness manifest it could well be too late.

Modern lifestyle diseases, especially the “big three”, heart disease, cancer and diabetes take years and even decades to get a foothold in your body.

These diseases at present cannot be cured…only treated, leaving their victims with half a life. Rather than depend on drugs to help with the symptoms after the disease manifests, it would be smarter to find ways of keeping ourselves healthy instead of waiting for illness to strike and treating the symptoms.

Your health is nothing to take for granted.

Prevention is the keyword here. It is better to start taking notice of your waistline now and regard it as a warning sign that the chemistry of your body is unbalanced.

It’s a sad truth that most people only become aware of their health or pay any attention to it when it is taken away. Do not wait for that to happen. Get moving, get active, get strong, get fit and you will be on your way to defeating not only that thickening waist line but the aging process as well.
